The Mandelbrot set is a fractal that has become popular outside of mathematics both for its aesthetic appeal and its complicated structure, arising from a simple definition. This is largely due to the efforts of Benoît Mandelbrot and others, who worked hard to communicate this area of mathematics to the general public.

Programming Links

At Notre Dame, we use "Turing" as a programming tool in grades 11 and 12. Turing was published by a company called HoltSoft but has since ceased operations. Despite this, it is an excellent language for teaching students the basics of programming.

In grade 12, we use "Ready to Program" - a Java editor - which was also published by Holtsoft.

Both programs are now available in the public domain (i.e.: free of charge)
